Babcock, CQ Rescue, and StarFlight Australia Purchase 6 Aircraft
Leonardo has seen additional popularity for its intermediate twin engine helicopter, the AW139, after selling 6 of the type to 3 prime Australian operators.
The customers split up the order, with 2 AW139s going to Babcock for a range of HEMS, search and rescue, and inter-hospital patient transport missions on behalf of an undisclosed client. Babcock’s new aircraft will be delivered in 2024 and will enter service in the latter half of the year once they complete local customization.
The second pair will go to CQ Rescue for use in the Mackay region of Central Queensland to perform on and off-shore EMS and SAR missions. The upgrade to current-gen AW139s will provide CQ more performance than ever before, with a 30% increase in mission speed. CEO Tim Healee said the AW139 is “one of the most reliable platforms in the industry,” adding “This incredible acquisition of two state-of-the-art aircraft is only possible because of the generous support we receive from our community, our corporate supporters and the Queensland Government.”
The last 2 aircraft will head to StarFlight Australia, for use in similar capacities. The aircraft will be delivered in late 2024, and will see similar modifications to their compatriots before entering service. The order brings the total AW139 fleet of the company and LifeFlight groups in the region to 15.
StarFlight Director Ashley van de Veld said the firm was excited for their new aircraft. “StarFlight Australia is pleased to have finalized the purchase of two new AW139 helicopters which will be utilized for future work. We already operate a number of these aircraft in our fleet and are constantly impressed with their reliability, quality, and serviceability. The features, technology, size, and all-round advanced capabilities the AW139s offer, make these aircraft ideal for our requirements. Their versatility and readiness for various configurations also aid us in delivering tailor-made aviation solutions to our clients.”
