Florida’s “Flying Classroom” Goes To Virginia

Florida’s “Flying Classroom” Goes To Virginia For The Day

Experience Aviation, based in Miami, Florida at the Opa-Locka Executive Airport (KOPF) will be conducting a STEM-filled day of hands-on activities at the Newport News/Williamsburg International Airport (KPHF) in Virginia on 29 September 2022 from 10am to 4pm. Experience Aviation seeks to inspire and amaze kids through innovative STEM learning opportunities revolving around aviation called the “Flying Classroom”.

The Flying Classroom is a K-8 integrative STEM+ supplemental curriculum that has correlative activities to geography, informational literacy. Writing, art, and social studies. What sets this “classroom” apart from other STEM is that it is based on Mr. Irving’s global expeditions and leads educators through implementing integrative instruction with students in real-time. Additionally, it provides opportunities for students to engage in current events that impact us globally as well as the relevance of the content to inform their understanding of the world around them.

Some hands-on projects in which students have participated include constructing a Ford Daytona ‘65 coupe, restoring a Cessna a 152 & 182, rebuilding a 818 Sports Car, rebuilding a GTM Super Car, rebuilding a Zenith Zodiac XL, and on more than one occasion, Mr. Irving has test flown/driven the resulting handiwork. Mr. Irving was the youngest African American to fly around the world solo in 2007 at age 23, and since then, has blazed a trail while trying to give back to the community. They have engaged in 4200+ hours of workshops, 25,000+ volunteer hours, graduated 3100+ from the program, and awarded over $2m in scholarships.

Experience Aviation has partnered with a variety of aerospace and professional organizations that have provided resources and financial support. The foundation first visited the Newport News/Williamsburg International Airport in 2021, and this repeat visit will be a great opportunity for both the foundation and the youth from the 2021 STEM expo to reconnect and gauge progress.
