Grounded Dreamliners Costing Polish Airline

LOT Airline Says Losses Amount To $50,000 Per Day

Having its two Dreamliners sit idle on the ground is costing the struggling Polish state-run airline LOT some $50,000 per day, according to Deputy Treasury Minister Rafal Baniak. For the month they been grounded, the losses have added up to some $2.5 million.

LOT was the first European airline to take delivery of a Dreamliner. The Associated Press reports that the airline has six additional Dreamliners on order with Boeing that were expected to be delivered early this year.

The official Polish news agency PAP reports that, in information delivered to a parliamentary committee on Wednesday, the Treasury Ministry said that the $50,000 per day loss does not take into account reimbursements to passengers and other costs. The state-run airline is said to be deeply in debt.

And the losses are not expected to stop mounting up anytime soon. LOT said last week that it intends to keep the airplanes grounded through October as Boeing works through the battery issues that have led to the worldwide grounding of the fleet.
