AeroSports Update: Sling Airplane To Be Built In 4 Days

The Sling 4-4-40 Challenge Has Started And 40 Workers Will Attempt To Build And Fly A Sling 4 In Just 4 Days!

A team of 40 workers from The Airplane Factory, including admin, catering, and marketing staff, will attempt to build and fly a Sling 4 in four days! The build will take place at the 2014 Africa Aerospace and Defense Expo at the Waterkloof Air Force Base in South Africa. The project started yesterday and is planned to be completed on Saturday, September 20th.

The team will work around the clock, with the day and night being split into 10 and 14 hour shifts, respectively. The build processes and procedures will essentially follow the same pattern as they do when a plane is built at the factory, but there will be two teams working on an airframe sub-assembly at a time instead of one. At the same time, the electrical, upholstery, and engine installation teams will work on their respective projects. All will come together on day three, just in time for the final assembly team to work through the night in preparation for a test flight on Saturday afternoon.

This is not the first time that The Airplane Factory has undertaken such an exciting project. Back in 2011, the Sling 5577 Challenge took place, in which 5 men from the factory and 5 women who never had touched a rivet gun built a Sling 2 in 7 days. It then took an additional 7 to fly the aircraft from Johannesburg to Poland, where it was delivered to an eager customer.
