Pilot Says Panicked Tourist Contributed To Fatal Peru Accident

Four Passengers Killed When Plane Struck Power Lines

The pilot and sole survivor of the April 9 downing of a Cessna 206 in southern Peru says the accident was caused by a passenger who became frantic, and tugged on the pilot's safety harness.

Carlos Bartra reportedly told AeroIca, the company that hired the pilot to fly French tourists over the Nazca Lines, one of the passengers panicked shortly after takeoff. AeroIca representative Franklin Holler related that account to Peru's RPP Noticias news service.

Bartra tried to turn back to land at the departure airport... but the plane impacted power lines and then struck a three-story building, killing the four tourists. Holler theorized the female passenger Bartra identified may have become panicked by strong winds in the area.

Aircraft are often hired to fly over the Nazca Lines, ancient drawings etched into the desert sands created sometime between 200 BC and 600 AD. The geoglyph formation is best viewed from overhead.
