Pratt & Whitney Shows Off Geared Turbofan Engine

Flyover Of Connecticut Facility Conducted By Airbus A320neo

For the first time since the Pratt & Whitney Geared Turbofan engine went into service, an A320neo equipped with the engines "on wing" made a visit to Bradley Airport in Connecticut.

The airplane made a pass over the Pratt & Whitney facilities in East Hartford and Middletown, where they are manufactured, according to radio station WNPR.

In the PurePower engine family, a gear system separates the engine fan from the low pressure compressor and turbine, allowing each of the modules to operate at their optimum speeds. The company says this enables the fan to rotate slower and while the low pressure compressor and turbine operate at a high speed, increasing engine efficiency and delivering significantly lower fuel consumption, emissions and noise. This increased efficiency also translates to fewer engine stages and parts for lower weight and reduced maintenance costs, according to Pratt & Whitney.

The company has a huge backlog for the engines, due in part to some technical problems encountered with the manufacture of the powerplants.

The engine entered service in Europe earlier this year on airplanes flown by Lufthansa.
