Canadian Military Helo Makes Precautionary Landing

Clipped An Antenna On A Coast Guard Ship During Training Exercise

A Canadian Griffon military helicopter made a precautionary landing Monday night after striking the antenna of a Canadian Coast Guard ship during a training exercise.

According to a report in the Times Colonist newspaper, the aircraft's main rotor struck a wire on the Sir William Alexander. The pilot made a precautionary landing in the front yard of a summer home in Shaw Island about 43 miles southwest of Halifax, N.S. at about 2230 local time.

Maj. Martell Thompson of the Joint Rescue Coordination Center in Halifax said that the resident of the house was not home at the time of the incident. Neighbors showed firefighters to the gate leading to the lawn where the aircraft had landed.

Blair Hodgmen, who lives nearby, said the pilot went to another house and asked to use the telephone, as he had not been carrying his cell phone on the flight. "They were kind of ... embarrassed," she told the paper.

There were no injuries, and the Canadian military will investigate the incident, according to Thompson.
