Search For MH370 To Be Suspended

Malaysian Government Says It Has No Plans To Continue Beyond May 29

The Malaysian government has announced that it will end its search for the main wreckage of MH370, a Malaysian Airlines Boeing 777 that went missing in March, 2014.

The government had promised the families of those lost when the airplane vanished that they would continue to search for the airplane "whatever happens." While the official search led by the Australian government ended last January, a private U.S. firm "Ocean Infinity" had continued the effort on the promise of $70 million payday if they found the plane.

But Wednesday, Malaysian Transport Minister Anthony Loke said the search would be extended to May 29, but then the effort would end, according to a report form the U.K. newspaper The Standard. He said the government would be preparing a full report on the investigation, but has not set a date for that report's release.

Investigators continue to hold to the theory that the plane somehow depressurized and everyone on board was already dead when it impacted the water somewhere in the Indian Ocean. But a different theory has surfaced following an investigation by the television program "60 Minutes Australia" which holds that the pilot committed suicide by deliberately crashing the plane.
