Student Injured In Mishap During First Solo

Lost Control Of Helo On Takeoff

A student helicopter pilot was severely injured when his Robinson R44 crashed shortly after takeoff Monday at Covington Municipal Airport in Covington, GA.

According to flight instructor Russ Darby, the student had been flying with his flight instructor "for about an hour" before attempting his solo flight.

"He got about 100 feet up, just after lift-off, then lost control," Darby told ANN. "He landed upside down."

The student, believed to be in his fifties, was lucky. According to Darby, there is a medical helicopter transport team stationed in a nearby hangar.

"We had paramedics and RNs there very quickly," Darby said.

The student was extricated, treated on scene then airlifted to Atlanta Medical Center by Lifeflight Aeromedical Services with head trauma and possible abdominal bleeding, according to Darby.

"He also had this big cut, this gash, on his forehead," he said. "I've been told he's made it though surgery and is going to be ok."
