T-37 v. Crop Duster MidAir

USAF Pilots Bail, Cropduster Killed

A USAF T-37 jet trainer from Sheppard AFB has been involved in a Tuesday midair collision with a crop dusting aircraft. The collision shortly before noon local time at an altitude estimated at 5000 feet. The collision occurred over rural southwestern Oklahoma.

The USAF pilots experienced minor injuries after punching out following the collision with a new Air Tractor crop duster that was on a delivery flight from its factory in Olney, TX to a new owner in South Dakota. The Air Force pilots were identified as Capt. Christopher S. Otis and 2Lt. Roderick V. James. They were picked up a short distance from the crash site and taken to a medical facility. The pilot of the Air Tractor has not been identified.

This is the second midair collision involving T-37 since 2002. Two T-37s collided some 80 miles east of Frederick, OK while flying in formation -- all four pilots survived pretty much unscathed. The 50 year-old T-37 is being used by the USAF and NATO for pilot training.
