Pilot Fatally Injured In Eurofighter Typhoon Accident

Airplane Impacted The Ocean During An Air Show South Of Rome

The pilot of an Italian Eurofighter Typhoon taking part in an Italian air show near the coastal town of Terracina, about 30 miles south of Rome.

The U.K. newspaper The Mirror relays reports from several Italian sources confirming the accident, which was observed by hundreds of spectators and captured on video posted to various social media platforms.

The pilot is reported to be Captain Gabriele Orlandi. He was performing a loop during the air show and did not recover before impacting the water. He was unable to eject before the impact. The pilot's wife and parents were reportedly in the audience and witnessed the accident.

Capt. Orlandi was reportedly an experience air show pilot well qualified to perform the maneuver.

His body was discovered about 90 minutes after the accident occurred. The Italian Air Force has opened an official inquiry into the accident.
