Aero-TV: FPNA's Capetown -- Floating Freedom With Wings

A True 'Escape' Vehicle

If there is anything that's missing from the Zoom Family Air Cadre, it's an amphib... and after seeing the FPNA Capetown (in full amphib configuration) at this year's Sebring Sport Aviation Expo, I might have to look at changing that.

The $125.5K CapeTown is distributed by Floatplanes and Amphibs LLC, of Sebring, FL. The Capetown is constructed with an all metal anodized aluminum riveted airframe with ‘Ceconite’ doped fabric covered control surfaces. The cowls and wingtips are composite, while all fabric is UV-proofed as it is sealed and painted, offering a projected 20-year life.

It is powered by a Rotax 912ULS (100hp) 4-stroke engine. The cockpit is over 50 inches wide, in a 2-seat side-by-side, adjustable configuration. The primarily clear doors are extended all the way to the floor, to offer what FPNA calls a 'helicopter-like' view out each side.

Clear panels behind the cockpit enhance the view even further. The bird features full dual controls... Dual Yokes, hydraulic brakes, and dual rudder pedals -- with the throttle and throttle and flap lever located overhead, between the seats.

Full span ailerons (deployable to 10 and 20 degrees), offer exceptional STOL properties, allowing for 200 foot takeoffs and 300 foot landings. The 1430 pound (gross) Capetown cruises at 100 mph and has a 500 mile range. Its stalls at a sedate 37 mph.
