At NBAA-BACE, 14 Scholarships Awarded To Future Business Aviation Leaders

Wide Range Of Programs Support Young Professionals Seeking BizAv Careers

The NBAA, through NBAA Charities, offers a wide range of scholarships that support young people seeking careers in business aviation. This week at the 2016 Business Aviation Convention & Exhibition (NBAA-BACE), students will receive the following awards:

UAA Janice K. Barden Aviation Scholarship

The UAA Janice K. Barden Aviation Scholarship is named for the late founder of Aviation Personnel International, who was active in the aviation community for decades and served as the local committee chair of NBAA’s convention eight times, more than any other individual in the association’s history. This year's recipients are:

  • Walker Goodman, a junior at California Baptist University who is studying aviation flight.
  • Alex Hunt, a senior at the University of North Dakota who is majoring in aviation and business management.
  • Anni Luong, a junior at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University who is majoring in air traffic management.
  • Kyle Neisius, a sophomore at the University of Dubuque who is studying flight operations.
  • Lyons Wells, a sophomore at Westminster College who is majoring in aviation flight operations.
  • Alan H. Conklin and Bill de Decker Business Aviation Management Scholarship

The Conklin Scholarship was created to honor the memory of Al Conklin, a U.S. Air Force veteran, business aviation leader and member of NBAA's Operations Committee. The scholarship is awarded to students at NBAA/University Aviation Association (UAA) member institutions who are pursuing a career in business aviation management.

This year’s recipient is Leonia Hunt, a junior at the Florida Institute of Technology who is majoring in aviation management/flight technology.

William M. Fanning Maintenance Scholarship

The Fanning Scholarship recognizes individuals who are studying to enter the field of business aviation maintenance. The scholarship is named in honor of retired NBAA staff member William M. Fanning, who was active in maintenance issues during his nearly 20-year tenure at the association. This year’s recipients are:

  • Benjamin Cohen, a senior at Greenville Technical College in Greenville, SC. Cohen has participated in several aviation-related events around the area, such as the Aviation Expo at Greenwood County Airport. He is working at Stevens Aviation as a customer service representative.
  • Joseph Schimnich, who has been accepted into the airframe and powerplant program at Northland Community and Technical College in Thief River Falls, MN. Schimnich's many aviation-related activities have included being a member and Young Eagles co-coordinator of EAA Chapter 511.
  • Lawrence Ginocchio Aviation Scholarship

The Lawrence Ginocchio Aviation Scholarship was created in 2001 by NBAA Charities, along with the family and friends of the late Lawrence Ginocchio, to honor his outstanding personal contribution to business aviation. This year's recipients, selected for demonstrating honesty, integrity and selflessness, are:

  • Steven Anderson, a junior at Oklahoma State University who is majoring in aerospace administration and operations, with option in professional pilot.
  • David Looney, a senior at University of North Texas who is studying aviation logistics.
  • Shane Martin, a senior at Arizona State University who is majoring in aviation management.
  • Francisco Felipe Pastrana, a junior at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University who is majoring in aerospace engineering with a minor in flight.
  • Bradley Smith, a senior at Southern Illinois University at Carbondale who is studying aviation management.
  • Eddie Queen Business Aviation Management Scholarship

Along with Signature Flight Support, NBAA Charities created the Eddie Queen Business Aviation Management scholarship to honor the memory of Eddie Queen, a Signature Flight Support line service technician for 58 years. It is awarded to students pursuing a career in business aviation management at NBAA/UAA institutions who show can exceptional commitment to customer service.

This year’s recipient is Destry Jacobs, a junior at Arizona State University who is majoring in aeronautical technologies management with a minor in organizational leadership.
