Two Fatally Injured In AT-6 Accident

Warbird Reportedly Experienced Mechanical Difficulty After Takeoff

Two people were fatally injured Tuesday evening when the AT-6 they were aboard went down shortly after takeoff from Falcon Field Airport in Mesa, AZ.

The aircraft had taken off as part of a two-ship formation, according to Mesa Police Department Detective Steve Berry, who said there may have been mechanical difficulties with the aircraft. The airplane was making a right turn when it went down.

Television station KPHO/KTVK reports that a witness said that the plane look like it was about to collide with another aircraft, and that the pilot appeared to lose control. Berry could not confirm the witness account.

FAA records indicate that AT-6 was manufactured in 1942, and was registered to a limited liability corporation in Mesa, AZ.

The other aircraft flying with the accident airplane returned to the airport and landed safely.
