Analyst Suggests Computers Contribute As Much CO2 As Aviation

Powerplants Supporting Devices Contribute Two Percent Of Global Emissions

Here's a factoid that may come in handy when your boss suggests teleconferencing to replace face-to-face meetings: digital devices generate as much greenhouse gas every year as aviation.

At least, Simon Mingay says so. He's an analyst at Gartner Incorporated, and he added up all the emissions generated by powerplants serving personal computers, servers, fixed and mobile-phones, digital networks, printers and telecommunications. He found the contribution at two per cent of total world emissions, or about the same as all the world's aviation.

Mingay says most businesses and private consumers are oblivious to the impact of their IT purchases.. but predicts that by 2010, a third of all businesses will have environmental responsibility among their top six buying criteria.

He adds energy is only part of the issue -- that reducing the use of hazardous materials and stepping up recycling are also key areas.
