4th Squadron 534 Student Obtains Ray Aviation Scholarship as the Chapter Looks to 2023
Chapter 534 of the Experimental Aircraft Association gathered for their yearly Christmas party at the Leesburg International Airport administration building.
The meet was a chance to catch up with fellow members while having a good time with friends from the Leesburg, Florida region. After completing the gift swaps and catered dinner, the chapter's outgoing President Steve Tilford gave an address to close out the year, followed by Mike Hage before his term next year.
The Leesburg unit is a fine example of an active, dedicated EAA chapter, taking care of the full spectrum of the org's mission. Whether bringing in fresh blood to the industry or keeping the old salts sharp, Unit 534 maintains a constant tempo of activity throughout the year. This year saw some much-needed hangar improvements to help improve lessons on building and repair for Squadron 534, the chapter's youth component.
The Squadron has been fortunate to receive 4 of the EAA's Ray Aviation Scholarships throughout its history, building the flying skill of young folks with the help of the National EAA organization. This year, a $5000 Ray Scholarship was awarded to the Squadron's Nick Hopkins, who will train to become a licensed motor glider pilot when he turns 16. Once complete, he'll join the pantheon of Squadron scholarship recipients working on their next ratings, all advancing with their EAA-funded PPLs to bigger, tougher ratings.
Chapter 534 continues to host a steady round of Young Eagles flights every month, taking up kids ages 8 to 17 for a short demonstration flight. Local Chapter pilots, like all EAA volunteers in the program, donate their time, aircraft, and fuel to ensure a future for general aviation.
For those looking to bolster their own EAA chapter, or look into what's possible with a dedicated cadre of aviation enthusiasts, the Leesburg Chapter is one to watch.
