Strike Averted At Vancouver Airport

Security Personnel Were To Walk Picket Line

It nearly went all the way... but an 11th-hour deal Tuesday between the International Association of Machinist and Aerospace Workers and officials at Vancouver International Airport averted a threatened strike by 250 security workers there.

The Globe and Mail reports talks between both sides had broken off... but according to union leader Mike Clegg, officials with security provider Securigard later came back to the table, and suggested a mediator handle their dispute over a new pay contract.

Several hours later, a plan was in place... resolving to send the dispute to binding arbitration if a negotiated agreement can't be reached. The union also won the promise of a first contract... which was enough to keep the picket lines away from the airport.

Mediated talks are set to begin Wednesday.

Airport officials say they had plans in place if the workers -- who handle all security at the airport, save for passenger and baggage screening -- had walked the line.

Especially with security -- all security -- being foremost on the minds of travellers right now, though... they're probably grateful it didn't come to that.
