Soyuz Launch From French Guiana Pushed To April 2010

Mobile Launch Pad Is Cited As The Cause

Russia's first launch of a Soyuz spacecraft from the European Space Agency facility in French Guiana has been pushed back to April of 2010, according to the international news service AFP.

The launch had initially been schedule for this year, but had been delayed once before until January of 2010. The Russian News Agency Itar-Tass said a mobile launch pad issue was the cause of the delay.

Russia had depended almost entirely on its own Baikonur launch facility in Kazakstan, but the French Guiana site is nearer the equator, which will allow heavier payloads.  The Earth's rotation gives launches from near the equator an additional boost.

Roscosmos head Vitaly Davydov said Tuesday that Russia would more than double the number of civilian satellites in orbit by 2015, RIA Novosti reported.
