Sundowner Damaged in Aborted Go-Around

A planned-routine trip from Oshkosh to Madison (WI) on Friday turned into a recovery effort, as the student pilot, getting out of Oshkosh to hone landing skills with some touch and goes, put the plane down on the runway.

The way our ANN News-Spy (who knows the instructor) told us, the instructor, noting that the flaps had been retracted, and things were squared away for the takeoff, asked the usual, "Do you think we'll get airborne again in time?" question, which apparently set the student to thinking.

A second (or maybe two) later, the student thought the answer should have been, "no," and pulled the power. Seven hundred feet of black stripes now mark the last part of the runway, leading to some torn-up turf, and then some broken trees. Eventually, one comes to the crumpled Beech, in which neither pilot was injured.

The nose gear is now part of the aft cowling; the motor mount is broken; the prop had time to stop, and it stopped in the horizontal position, though a post-crash look showed a 1/32" blade-to-blade runout. The starboard wing is also in the swept-back position, with additional damage.

Winter, for the owner/instructor, will be like the Cubs' off-season: rebuilding.
