Pax, Crew Safe After RDU Airplane Evacuation

Cockpit Smoke Leads Pilots To Abort Takeoff

Smoke seeping into the cockpit prompted 20 people to evacuate an Embraer regional jet as it was preparing to takeoff from Raleigh-Durham International Airport just before noon Wednesday. The pilots aborted their takeoff, and the three crewmembers and 17 passengers aboard Flight 4646 bound for Newark, NJ fled the plane via inflatable slides.

No one was injured in the incident. The Charlotte Observer reports passengers were later bused back to the terminal, where they then awaited word on whether any of the airline's three other flights to Newark could accomodate them.

There was no indication of a fire onboard the aircraft, according to American Eagle spokesman Dave Jackson. He added the 37-seat aircraft (file photo of type, above) had been pulled from service for tests.

An airport spokesperson said things were back to normal at the airport within an hour.
