North Dakota Police May Get Taser-Equipped UAVs

Law Allows 'Non-Lethal' Weapons On Police Unmanned Aircraft

A new law which went into effect in North Dakota August 1 allows police UAVs to carry 'non-lethal' weapons such as Tasers, rubber bullets, and tear gas

USA Today reports that House Bill 1328 began as a measure to require police to obtain a search warrant before using such aircraft for surveillance. An amendment to the bill reportedly written by a lobbyist with ties to police would allow the aircraft to carry anything but a lethal weapon, but it does not specifically call for non-lethally-armed UAVs.

The bill was originally introduced by State Representative Rick Becker. He said that he will push to strike the Section 5(1) of the law which states "A law enforcement agency may not authorize the use of, including granting a permit to use, an unmanned aerial vehicle armed with any lethal weapons" during the next session in 2017.

The bill passed the North Dakota House 78-14, and the State Senate 29-17.
