Gone West: Balloon Fiesta Founder Sid Cutter

Former USAF Pilot Was 77

The founder of one of ANN's favorite events ... the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta ... has passed away following a lengthy battle with stomach cancer. Sid Cutter died in his sleep Sunday morning at the age of 77.

Cutter, a former U.S. Air Force pilot, founded the Albuquerque event in 1972. A U.S. Hot Air Balloon champion in 1978 and 1986, he is credited with making the New Mexico city synonymous with balloons, according to pilot Troy Bradley. Television station KOAT reports that Cutter was the first person to own a balloon in the state.

Albuquerque Mayor Richard J. Berry told the Associated Press that Cutter "was an icon for balloon enthusiasts and as the founder of the Balloon Fiesta, he put Albuquerque on the map for many around the world. Our city has lost a dear friend and a ballooning legend."

The Albuquerque Balloon Fiesta is one of the world's largest balloon festivals, as well as one of the city's biggest tourist attractions.

Cutter is survived by his wife, Jewel, a daughter, one brother and six grandchildren.
