Two Arrested For Illegal Import Of Drones In India

Seven Precision Hawk Drones Impounded At Pune International Airport

Two men have been arrested in India for the illegal import of seven Precision Hawk drones made in the United States.

The Pune Mirror newspaper reports that the aircraft were impounded by authorities in September, 2016. The two suspects were located and arrested last Friday.

The Precision Hawk is a fixed-wing drone used primarily for mapping and agricultural applications.

The men accused of the illegal import are Saurabh Mishra, managing director, and Prateek Srivastava, marketing manager of Webonise Pvt Ltd. Under questioning, Srivastava admitted to taking part in the crimes, and that the company was formed specifically to carry out the sales of the illegally-imported drones. They also established a fake store to sell the aircraft, which were imported as parts and assembled in India.

The men were charged with unauthorized import of drones in violation of the Customs Act of 1962. They also face charges from the Wireless Planning and Coordination (WPC) wing of the Ministry of Communications.
