New Drone Training Academy Opened In Grand Forks, ND

SkySkopes Has Established The Program At The UND Center For Innovation

Aspiring professional drone pilots have a new option for training with the opening of a new training academy at the University of North Dakota Center for Innovation.

The new training center will be operated by SkySkopes, and it is geared toward anyone with a desire to learn more about unmanned aircraft and the overall industry, whether they are currently a hobbyist or an owner of an unmanned aircraft business.

“We’re not here to just teach someone how to run a drone business,” SkySkopes Director of Flight Operations Mike Johnson said. “We want people to have a better understanding of the national airspace and be able to navigate it safely.”

The academy will begin training students in the spring with both online and in-person classes, according to a report from sUAS news.

While the SkySkopes Academy will be located on the UND campus, it won't compete with the university's UAS program, according to SkySkopes president and CEO Matt Dunlevy. He said the two programs will complement one another rather than compete. Dunlevy said the program offered by SkySkopes is "real world training, it’s industry training and it’s hands-on experiential learning.”

The program expects to have between 10 and 20 students in each class, and more courses will be offered as the program grows. Eventually, online courses will be offered to high school students as well, according to the report.
