What happens when you try to tow a brand new A330 with a B767 towbar?

One of our news spies in Australia sent us this set of pictures of an event that we're sure the people involved wish had never happened.

This event occurred a few weeks ago and the aircraft involved was Qantas' first internationally configured A330. It arrived in country from Toulouse on a Tuesday, then spent Wednesday in the hangar.

It was then moved out of the hangar and was on its way to a reception attended by members of the Australian parliament and the media, among others.

Unforuntately, the tow bar shear pins broke, and the tug veered to the left. The folks on the flight deck were apparently not paying attention to what was happening outside the windows, because no brakes were applied, and the left hand engine impacted the tug.

The reception was subsequently cancelled.
