Model Airplane Flyers In Las Cruces, New Mexico Are Proud Of Their Airport
Airports can be an asset to the community, but it’s not often that we hear of a model airplane airport that is as nice as the one that has been created in Las Cruces, NM. According to an article in the Las Cruces Sun-News, the entire community is taking pride in this new activity area in their community.
In an attempt to find a productive way to repurpose old landfills, it’s reported the city decided to use part of the property to build a top-notch model airplane airport. According to the report, this area will also feature an archery range that will have more than 20 targets, and both the model airplane airport and the archery range will be open to the public.
It’s reported that the model airplane airport has two runways, both of which are 100 feet wide and 600 feet long. Needless to say, there are probably some ultralight pilots that would love to have a facility as nice as this one. It also includes fenced areas for observers to watch the action, and covered shade ports complete with tables for modelers to tune-up their equipment are provided.
Jerry DeLong, who is the president of the Mesilla Valley Model Airplane Club is quoted as saying, "The future of this facility is only limited by our imagination." The model Airplane club is reported to have about 50 members. From a YouTube video, club member Jim Caldwell said, “I think we are going to have the classiest model flying site in the Southwest U.S.”
The article stated that, “Ed Carnathan, director of sports sales for Visit Las Cruces, also known as the Las Cruces Convention and Visitors Bureau, said efforts have already begun in hopes of bringing national and regional model airplane competitions to Las Cruces.”
