You're Still An Airline Pilot? Are You Sure?

Northwest Lays Off More Pilots

As the airline industry continues to languish in a post-9/11 slump, Northwest Airlines has laid off another 60 pilots. This week's management announcement from Minneapolis brings to 693 the total number of pilots given their walking papers since the September 11th attacks on America.

That number represents more than 10 percent of the Northwest pilot workforce.

In fact, more than 12,000 Northwest employees have been laid off since the terror assaults. In January, the carrier also laid off 450 flight attendants.

Northwest spokesman Bill Mellon told the Minneapolis Star-Tribune, "The hope was that by last summer there would be a recovery. While flying has come back somewhat from Sept. 11, it is still not at the year 2000 level, which was the last normal year for the industry."
