Drone Park Planned for Henderson County, KY

Will Be Built In Conjunction With The Henderson R/C Airplane Club

The Henderson County (KY) Fiscal Court has approved an agreement between the county and the Henderson R/C airplane club that will result in the region's first purpose-built drone park and obstacle course.

The Gleaner reports that the agreement outlines the responsibilities of both parties in building and maintaining the facility, which will be located at Sandy Lee Watkins Park. The project is expected to cost about $5,000.

The park already has an R/C flying field, and the drone course will be built adjacent to the model airplane runway. The bulk of the expense for the park will be pouring concrete slabs for a launch and recovery area. A concrete table on which pilots can work on their drones will also be placed at the park but County Engineer Bill Hubiak said that someone was donating those items, so it would come at no cost to the county.

The obstacles, which will mostly be made of PVC, will be removable to make mowing the park easier for county employees. They will be stored in an archery building when not in use, according to the report.

Henderson County Judge-executive Brad Schneider said the park will the drone obstacle course could attract new people to the park, where competitions can be organized bringing revenue to the county. It will be administered by the R/C club.
