Receives Authorization From BLM To Transport The
A controversial art installation based on a Boeing 747 fuselage will be returning to Burning Man 2019 after the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) and the Burning Man Project approved plans to move and store the exhibit.
USA Today reports that the art object has been moved to a staging area in preparation for this year's event. it is one of the largest installations at the annual event.
The Big Imagination Foundation first brought the exhibit to Burning Man in 2016. Last year, it sat for more than a month on the Black Rock Desert while officials crafted a plan to remove the exhibit without damaging the desert ecosystem. It was eventually moved to a storage area using 4-inch-thick mats to prevent the landing gear from digging ruts into the desert floor. To be included in the event this year, a plan for moving the exhibit to the site and removing it had to be approved by both the BLM and the Burning Man Project.
Not everyone is thrilled that the plane will be moved across the desert again this year. Local resident and conservationist Laura Blaylock told USA Today that she is "furious" that the plan has been approved. She said that the BLM has protection of the Black Rock-High Rock National Conservation Area as its core mission, but moving the plane crushes dues when it is moved.
The permit fees paid by the Big Imagination Foundation are intended to cover the cost of replanting and then fencing the dune area that the plane will transit while being moved across public land.
