Britain's Prince William was the co-pilot of the aircraft which effected the rescue of the two men from a life raft after their sailboat "Swanland" capsized in rough seas early Sunday morning local time. The crew sent out a mayday call about 0200 saying strong winds had cracked the boat's hull and it was taking on water.

Prince William was the co-pilot of one of the two helos dispatched from RAF Valley base to respond to the distress call, according to a report from CNN. The two men who were rescued appeared to be in "reasonable" condition after their time in the water.

The U.K. Coast Guard halted the search just before 1700 GMT as darkness fell over the search area. Five of the sailors are still missing.
