Senate Unlikely To Introduce FAA Legislation This Week

Sen. Nelson Says There Are Complicated Issues Beyond ATC Privatization

With the House version of FAA reauthorization on indefinite hold, Senate leaders said they would be introducing their own version of the bill ... but apparently that won't be happening sooner rather than later.

Politico reports that Senator Bill Nelson (D-FL) (pictured), the ranking Democrat on the Senate Commerce Committee, said that while ATC privatization that was included in the House bill is "a dead issue," there are other complicated matters that prevent the bill from being crafted in a week. "So there is going to be a continuation of some period of time" Nelson said.

The projection from Commerce Committee majority Republicans is that the FAA bill will be issued just before the next recess at the end of March.

A spokesman for Senator John Thune (R-SC), the chair of the committee, told Politico that Thune "plans to introduce a long term FAA reauthorization bill this work period."
