Fighters Escort Thomson Flight To Stansted

Two RAF Tornado F3s escorted a Thomson Boeing 737 into the UK's Stansted Airport Wednesday night after someone on board  the flight spotted an unattended cell phone near the front of the plane.

"I was in the garden when I heard these really loud planes fly overhead," 61-year old Stan Forth told the Daily Observer. "I'm interested in aircraft and knew straight away they weren't normal planes. One was very low, zig-zagging behind it and the other was very high up. I ran indoors to put my aircraft scanner on and heard people saying there was a suspicious package by the front of the plane. I could hear it all -- it was very exciting."

The 737, on a charter flight from Portugal to Coventry, England, landed without incident. It taxied to a spot away from the main terminal at Stansted and was boarded by members of the 11th Explosive Ordnance Disposal Regiment based in Colchester.

The cell phone was just what it appeared to be -- nothing dangerous.

The 103 passengers on board were briefly questioned, then bused to Coventry.
