Airborne 05.31.19: Sebring 2020 Cancelled, Red Bull Shutdown, D-Day Squadron

Also: Gogo 5G Network, Guardian 400 World Demo Tour, Tavares Seaplane Base, Fake Drone Collision

And.... another one bites the dust. Just as the shock of the Red Bull racing announcement about their withdrawal was starting to wear off, we have news of another long-time aviation event hitting the deck.

Sebring Regional Airport in Sebring, FL will no longer host its Aviation Expo in January, but has offered little explanation for the move. Anecdotally, attendance by exhibitors and visitors had been falling for some time, and there has been serious competition in the space from Deland, FL, which began putting on a Sport Aviation show in the fall three years ago. Sebring airport management released a statement to the media Thursday. As briefly noted shortly after their surprize Wednesday announcement, the Red Bull organization has pulled the chocks from under their highly touted air racing program. The reason? “The Red Bull Air Race provided sports entertainment of highest quality but did not attract the level of outside interest as many other Red Bull events across the world.” The rest of the year’s program now consists of only three remaining races, all outside the USA, before the end of the year. Students and faculty of Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University are providing crucial weather support to 15  vintage World War II C-47s, DC-3s and variants, nicknamed Dakotas, as they cross the Atlantic to celebrate the 75th anniversary reenactment of the Normandy invasion. Unlike modern commercial aircraft, the vintage planes are more restricted by inclement weather. They have limited internal climate control and, even more importantly, the de-icing varies by aircraft, so the pilots need to be informed of areas of potential icing. All this -- and MORE in today's episode of Airborne!!!
