Aero-News Alert: 17 Lost In Afghanistan Helo Mishap

All Victims Were Reportedly From Spain

ANN REAL TIME NEWS: 1000 EDT -- Spanish military authorities now say two helicopters went down near Herat, Afghanistan, Tuesday, killing 17 soldiers. While an Afghan commander providing security in the area said the crash was an accident, Spain's Defense Minister put that claim in doubt.

"It could have been an accident or it could have been an attack from the exterior,'' minister Jose Bono said in Madrid. He was quoted by the Associated Press.

0645 EDT -- At least a dozen people, all Spanish soldiers, were discovered dead Tuesday after their helicopter crashed near the city of Herat in western Afghanistan.

There's no immediate indication of the type of helicopter involved or the circumstances under which it went down.

"ISAF soldiers have been involved and some have been killed," Squadron Leader Andie Tolan, spokeswoman for the International Security Assistance Force told the Associated Press. "We don't know how many people were on board and why it crashed."
