Aero-TV: Avionics Tip of the Week - McDaniel’s Advice for WAAS Educators

McDaniel Explains How to Build a Foundation of WAAS Understanding

Many aircraft owners and pilots have heard of the Wide Area Augmentation System; yet, for most aviators, WAAS remains a complicated operational maze.

Developed by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the Department of Transportation (DOT), WAAS is used to combat the ionosphere disturbances, clock drift, and satellite orbit errors that prevent basic GPS signals from meeting the FAA requirements necessary for precision flight approach.

Matthew McDaniel, owner of Progressive Aviation Services, has developed a one-day seminar for current WAAS-pilots and pilots considering a WAAS upgrade to help build an informational foundation of both the benefit and usage of WAAS technology.

McDaniel suggests that pilots must first lay the groundwork of WAAS understanding by getting familiar with the machine itself by learning their way around the menus on the ground prior to testing WAAS in flight.

More importantly, McDaniel explains, instructors must spend extensive time and effort learning WAAS before providing WAAS instruction for students.  While flying a WAAS-capable aircraft can provide some base understanding, instructors must recognize the extensiveness of the WAAS systems.  Join Aero-TV as McDaniel provides advice for both WAAS trainers and trainees.
