Newest Order for 37 A320neo-Family Aircraft Brings Total to 59 Ordered in 2022
Long time Airbus customer International Airlines Group (IAG) has confirmed their order for 37 additional A320neos after obtaining shareholder approval.
The latest order follows earlier agreements in 2022 signed for 22 aircraft from the A320neo family. Throughout the year, their total purchases included 17 A320neo and 5 A321neo aircraft, bringing the total IAG haul to 59 single-aisle aircraft. The company said its selection of the Neo-series rested on its fuel savings and next-gen equipment, from avionics and cabins to aerodynamics and engines. The A320neo family continues to go strong, with more than 8,500 serving around the world.
“IAG operates Airbus aircraft extensively in its fleet making it one of the largest Airbus customers globally. These latest generation aircraft will be key in IAG’s stated environmental mission to operate the world’s most fuel efficient planes”, said Christian Scherer, Chief Commercial Officer and Head of Airbus International.
IAG is the parent company of a number of airlines including British Airways, Level, Vueling, Aer Lingus, and Iberia among others. Their operations have continued to make them one of Airbus’ biggest customers over the years, owning one of the largest brand fleets in the world in the neighborhood of ~500 aircraft. The year has been kind to them, with IAG reporting strong recovery in demand across all its airline brands. While its 3rd quarter release has yet to be issued, the 2nd quarter report echoed sentiments from other operators seeing a resurgent interest in travel as the industry returns to or exceeds 2019 levels.
