$200 Round Trip Airfare ... For A 4 Pound Kitten

Passenger's Fare Was $177

When New York resident Rosario Gonzalez planned to visit her family in Virginia, she also planned to take her 4 pound kitten Tiramisu along on vacation. But after buying an approved pet carrier, she discovered U.S. Airways charges a $100 pet fee.

Each way.

Television station WNYW reports Gonzalez had paid only $177 for her own round trip ticket. "I think $100 each way for a 4-pound kitten is unbelievably incredible and completely unfair," she told the station.

Rosario said she understands that airlines are a business, and that they have a right to charge fees for additional services. "(B)ut a reasonable fee," she said. "It's not fair to take advantage of us, the consumer." She said it makes less sense when children under 2 can ride for free on a parent's lap.

Most airlines charge for carrying a pet onboard, some as much as $150 each way.
