Airborne 09.19.18: SpaceX Moonshot, 747 'Art Car', Nat'l Aerobatic Championships

Also: FAA Reauthorization Stalled, First 777X, Unlicensed Pilot Arrested, Soundproofing PC-12

A Japanese entrepreneur and billionaire is the first passenger named for SpaceX's trip around the moon, which the company plans for 2023.

Yusaku Maezawa has been named as the first private passenger to fly around the moon. No human has been that close to the moon since 1972. Maezawa, whose net worth has been estimated at $2.9 billion, appeared on stage with SpaceX founder Elon Musk for an event held at the company's headquarters. "Finally I can tell you that I choose to go to the moon," he said. The Bureau of Land Management wants the owners of an "art car" from Burning Man that is made from the front half of a Boeing 747 fuselage removed from government land. It has been parked on the Black Rock Desert since the event ended two weeks ago. The display had been moved about 12 miles from the Burning Man site in the Nevada desert onto land managed by the Bureau. BLM acting communications chief Rudy Evenson said that the owners of the vehicle need to apply for a new permit to move the airplane since the event is over. Normally, as an art project the 747 would have been covered by the Burning Man organization's recreation permit, but that has expired. Some of the nation’s best aerobatic aircraft pilots will return to Oshkosh on September 22-28 to compete for the U.S. National Aerobatic Championships, hosted by the International Aerobatic Club. The event moved to Oshkosh last year after spending most of the past 45 years in Sherman/Denison, Texas. Approximately 100 pilots will compete in five separate categories during the week, ranging from Primary to Unlimited in both powered and glider aircraft. In addition, the top finishers in the Unlimited category will earn spots on the U.S. team that will compete next year at the world championships in France. All this -- and MORE in today's episode of Airborne!!!
