Wings Over Charlotte Harbor Joins Large List Of Cancelled Airshows

Originally Scheduled For October 24th & October 25th, 2020

Due to the runway rehabilitation at the PGD Airport, the FIAS Air Show Board of Directors was considering moving the 2020 Air Show to a Free Family Event - "Wings Over Charlotte Harbor."

After much discussion, it is with great reluctance that the FIAS Board of Directors has decided to cancel the "Wings Over Charlotte Harbor" Air Show scheduled for October 24th & October 25th, 2020.

There were several reasons for this decision.

  • While receiving tentative approval from the Punta Gorda City Council,  the City Service Departments of Punta Gorda were imposing, what the FIAS Board considered excessive fees, without any grant consideration, which made it financially unfeasable, to provide a free air show.
  • COVID-19 effect on City and County resources, with a possibility of resurgence of COVID-19 in the fall.
  • Lack of support from major city businesses - who would have benefited greatly from an AIr Show weekend.
  • Suspension of long time sponsors, due to these uncertain economic times.

Recognizing the community benefit and huge economic impact the Air Show provides, The FIAS Board of Directors wishes to thank Charlotte County Commissioners, and Charlotte County Government, which now and has always supported the Air Show with grant funding to cover County expenses.

Plans are currently underway to provide a FIAS "Flyover" thanking and honoring the heroes of the COVID-19, the nurses, doctors, first responders and those on the front lines of Charlotte County. Please follow our Facebook Page for details.
