Putin Says New Cosmodrome Will Open As Early As 2015

Manned Flights From The New Launch Complex Could Come In 2018

Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin says the new cosmodrome under construction in the far eastern Amur region of Russia could be launching humans into space as early as 2018. The launch complex has been planned since 2007, and has been called one of the "most ambitious projects in modern Russia" by the PM.

Russia has been leasing its launch facilities from Kazakhstan since the former Soviet Union collapsed. The Briebart news service says the Interfax news agency quotes Putin from a meeting Saturday on the construction project as saying that the country could be launching satellites and cargo from Vostochy by 2015, with manned flights possibly coming as soon as three years later.

The launch complex is expected to cost the country about $800 million (25 billion rubles). The news service reports that Russia currently pays Kazakhstan about $115 million per year for the use of the Cosmodrome there.
