Airborne 10.24.18: Stratolaunch Speeds Up, Bombardier Sues, uAvionix EXP Rebate

Also: XPRIZE New CEO, GIV Advanced Training, Swoop Delayed, Embraer Delivers

The huge Stratolaunch aircraft designed to carry boosters that will carry payloads into orbit completed a key taxi test just a few days after company founder Paul Allen passed away. Stratolaunch recently reached speeds of about 80 knots on a runway in the Mojave Desert.

The plane is expected to achieve its first flight after a few more such taxi tests are completed. Earlier this year, Allen explained that the Stratolaunch aircraft was more than just a vanity project, as some have suggested. "You don't build [that plane] unless you're very serious, not only about wanting to see the plane fly but to see it fulfill its purpose. Which is getting vehicles in orbit," he said. Bombardier has sued Mitsubishi in federal court in Seattle, WA alleging that employees hired away from Bombardier by the Japanese company sent emails containing trade secrets before going to work for their new employer. According to court documents, the suit alleges that Mitsubishi and its Seattle contractor AeroTEC hired about 92 employees that had been working for Bombardier at job fairs in the U.S. and Canada. The suit names several employees that allegedly leaked confidential documents and data concerning commercial airplane certification in the U.S. and Canada before switching jobs. The FAA's $500 ADS-B rebate is back on - but unfortunately for experimental / LSA owners - it only applies to certified avionics. For a limited time, uAvionix is evening up the situation by offering up to $150 off of their non-certified product line - including echoUAT and tailBeacon. To participate in the program, a customer must purchase an eligible uAvionix ADS-B system from uAvionix or one of their authorized resellers between Sept 15, 2018 and Nov 15, 2018. All this -- and MORE in today's episode of Airborne!!!
