Alabama RC Flyers Sent To The Dump

And They Say They're Happy To Be There

The Baldwin County (AL) Commission agreed last October to a long-term $1-per-year lease for five acres at the Magnolia landfill near Summerdale to the Bay Area Radio Control Society. The commission and the RC pilots say they hope to eventually conduct nationwide contests at the site.

The website baldwincountynow.com reports that society spokesperson Jack Phillips told the legislative body that the area is ideal for both flight training and competition flying. He said he hopes to be able to draw participants from across the nation.

And the county's solid waste department plans to jump on the bandwagon as well with the purchase of a few model aircraft to be placed on display. Director Jim Ransom said in that way they may be able to generate some interest among "landfill visitors."

Of course, as anyone who's seen how seagulls and other shorebirds congregate around landfills can guess, some of these pilots may learn firsthand about bird strikes.
