Things That Go Bump On The Ramp

When Jets Collide

Two aircraft collided as they were preparing for take-off at Manchester Airport (NH) Wednesday. There were no injuries, but both planes took a beating.

It happened at around 0630 EDT, according to WMUR-TV, which did not identify the types of aircraft involved. A Northwest Airlines Airbus headed for Washington/Dulles was taxiing toward the runway when its wing clipped the empennage of a United Airlines aircraft scheduled for Detroit.

The United aircraft suffered a prominent gash in its tail section. There was no word on damage to the Northwest Airbus.

"The tower instructed another aircraft to taxi behind that aircraft, and that's when the contact was made," said airport director Kevin Dillon.

Passengers from both flights were put on other aircraft. The FAA is investigating.
