MiG-21 Down: India

Pilot Lost

Another Indian Air Force pilot is dead after yet another MiG accident -- this one initially attributed to a bird strike.

The MiG-21 went down at Bangalore's HAL Airport Wednesday, as the aircraft was flying low at approximately 210 mph.

"Obviously, there must have been an engine seizure. The aircraft crashed between the runway and the parallel taxi track. When the pilot was floating down, he was drawn to the aircraft as the heat of the burning aircraft creates a sort of a pull," an IAF investigator told the Times of India.

The investigator said a bird was apparently ingested into the MiG's engine. "The big flame coming out of the compressor is typical of a bird-hit injection into the compressor. Earlier, we have had a case like this at Hyderabad, and it was a vulture injection, which caused the compressor to disintegrate," he said.
