Tragedy Marks Lahore Kite Festival

Seven Killed, More Than 100 Hurt

The annual kite flying festival in Lahore, Pakistan, turned deadly over the weekend. Seven people lost their lives, more than 100 were hurt and power was repeated knocked out to hundreds of thousands of people.

Among those killed:

  • An 18-month old baby, whose throat was cut by the string trailing from a stray kite
  • Three who died when the wires they used to guide their kites touched powerlines
  • Two who fell from roofs while trying to catch stray kites
  • A 12-year old boy who was hit by a car while trying to catch a stray kite.

To make matters worse, it's apparently something of a tradition to fire guns in the air during the kite flying festival.

"One child was injured by a stray bullet," deputy medical superintendent Dr Saqib Shafi told AFP.

More than 20 people have died in Pakistani kite-flying accidents since the last spring festival. That led to several new government restrictions were put in place. Those, however, were lifted for this year's festival.
