Airborne 09.28.16: NEW DJI Mavic!, EAA's Next STC, Sean Tucker Honored

Another new small unmanned aerial system is now on the market as drone manufacturer, DJI, has released its Mavic drone, which they say is their smallest aircraft equipped with a 4K camera.

The Mavic follows the recent trend of drones with foldable rotors for easy transportation. It follows recent introductions of the GoPro Karma and a Yuneec drone that also feature foldable rotors. The Mavic is about half the size of the DJI Phantom 4 flagship drone, but still includes sensors on the front and bottom of the aircraft for obstacle avoidance, subject tracking, indoor stability, and autonomous landing. In April of this year, EAA’s Accessible Safety STC, was approved to allow the installation of Dynon EFIS-D10A and EFIS-D100 systems in certain Cessna and Piper models, with more aircraft types expected to be added. Now, EAA and its subsidiary EAA STC, LLC are working with TruTrak Autopilots to bring its Vizion autopilot system to type-certificated aircraft. EAA STC has submitted an application to initially certify the system in Cessna 172 series aircraft, with a goal to expand the list of eligible aircraft to as many as possible. Aerobatic pilot Sean D. Tucker has been named the recipient of the Lloyd P. Nolen Lifetime Achievement in Aviation Award, presented annually by the Commemorative Air Force Wings Over Houston Airshow. The Lloyd P. Nolen Award is presented to an individual, organization, or company for lifetime achievement and promotion or advancement of aviation. Nolen, a humble and noble visionary, was a founding member of the Commemorative Air Force. All this -- and MORE in today's episode of Airborne!!!
