Russia Re-Entering Shuttle Market?

Designers Work On Reusable, Six-Place Spaceship

What's this? Russia is designing a replacement for the venerable Soyuz spacecraft (below), a mainstay of Russian and Soviet aerospace since the 1960s?

Da.

Officials in Moscow confirmed Friday that a design team RKK Energiya is working on a new spacecraft called "The Clipper." It's a six-place capsule with a launch weight of 16 tons -- more than twice that of the Soyuz.

The Clipper is being designed for multiple uses, as many as 25, before having to be replaced. It will be much more comfortable than the Soyuz, according to Nikolai Bryukhanov, deputy chief designer RKK Energiya. If the program gets sufficient funding from Moscow -- a big "if," given the current fiscal climate in Russia -- Bryukhanov says it can be ready for flight in five years.
