Five Fatally Injured In Mid Air Collision In San Diego

Sabreliner Jet, Cessna 172 Both On Approach To Brown Field Municipal Airport

Five people have been fatally injured in an accident involving a Sabreliner jet and a Cessna 172 which collided on approach to Brown Field Municipal Airport in San Diego, CA.

The accident occurred at around 11 a.m. local time Sunday according to television station KNSD. The NTSB said that the Sabreliner was registered to BAE Systems and was on a training mission under a contract with the U.S. Military, but that there were only BAE employees on board.

The 172 was reportedly on a cross-country flight.

None of those fatally injured have been identified.

There was a post-accident fire, which reportedly sparked several small fires on the ground which were quickly extinguished.

The planes came down about a mile apart, according to authorities. The main wreckage of the Sabreliner was on a grassy slope near the airfield, while the Cessna came down within the bounds of the San Diego National Wildlife Refuge.
