UK Flight Diverts After Copilot's Death

Cyprus-Bound Plane Lands In Istanbul

A recent GB Airways flight from Manchester, England to Cyprus had to divert, due to the death of the flight's first officer.

The London Times reports the Airbus A320, with 156 passengers onboard, landed in Istanbul Sunday evening following the declaration of a crew emergency.

"GB Airways confirms that yesterday’s flight BA 6826 from Manchester to Paphos diverted to Istanbul due to a medical emergency on the flight deck," the airline said in a prepared statement. "On landing, it was confirmed that the first officer (co-pilot) had died during the flight. At no time was the aircraft, passengers or crew in any danger.

"The first officer’s next of kin have been informed and our thoughts and condolences are with his wife and family following this tragic news."

Airline officials have since identified the co-pilot as Michael Warren, 43. "He had been with GB Airways since August 2005 and previous to that he flew with the RAF," a spokeswoman added.
