KLBL Faces Name Change

City Commission Seeking Public Input

In addition to a new runway, the Liberal Municipal Airport in Liberal, KS may be getting a new name.

In an address to the Liberal City Commission Tuesday night, airport manager Debbie Giskie explained ordinance No. 4338 that would amend city code to allow the name change.

The proposed name change, to Liberal Mid-America Airport, would reflect the upgraded runway and help make Liberal's airport stand out, she told the Southwest Daily Times.

"Because the main runway is being reduced from 150-feet wide to 100, we're going to have to change all the publications for that," she said. "The crosswind runway is now known as 3-21. It's going to change to 4-22... so this would be a good time to change the name."

Some commissioners questioned whether dropping the word 'municipal' was wise, but others didn't want to get "too wordy." The proposed name change would not affect the terminal, the Glenn L. Martin Terminal, or the FBO, Lyddon Aero Center.

The commission voted unanimously to table the ordinance for two weeks to gather public opinion.
